After Carmen this is Bizet’s most popular opera. The plot revolves around themes such as love, loyalty, friendship and individual sacrifice for the general welfare. Its great duet of fraternity, “Au fond du temple saint”, is one of the most famous fragments of French lyric poetry and the aria “Je crois entendre encore” is renowned for its sad nostalgic evocation. Although it is one of the titles of the usual repertoire of the main opera houses, it was only performed at the Teatro Colón in the 1913 season.
